Decades into the twentieth century many industrial buildings and their products had been abandoned and discarded into America’s wastelands. As these relics lay forgotten, their metallic skins aged into a time-weathered beauty: twisted steel, now earthy with rust; copper, the hues of sea and sky; brass, reflecting the golden browns of the fields they’re now apart of.
Through chemical reactions, I have purposely transformed metals of industry, such as steel, brass and copper, to mimic the corrosive weathering of rain, sun and sand. A final transformation occurs after wire-stitching these distressed metals together into new composite forms.
It is in the arid American West that some remnants of the industrial age can be found. This is a place of raw beauty and vast spaces, a place that can inspire contemplation of time and its effects on our psyche. These new forms are not only a homage to America’s industry, but to the imagination, mettle, and diversity of its people.
